Leaves are usually trifoliately compound, opposite and deciduous. Twigs are mottled green-brown with lenticels and lacking a central terminal bud. Bark is green-brown and streaked. Flowers are white and bell-shaped forming drooping clusters. Fruit is a papery inflated capsule. Bladdernut is an occasional shrub or small tree found in the eastern and central U.S.
