Leaves are simple, alternate and evergreen with an occasional red tooth on the margin and a red petiole. Bark is gray-brown and mostly smooth. Fruit is a shiny blue-black drupe. The leaves and fruit are poisonous to livestock but the fruit is eaten by some birds. Carolina laurel cherry is found in the southeastern U.S. on a variety of sites.
