| Virginia pine Pinus virginiana Pinaceae |
Needles are fascicled, in groups of 2, about 2 inches long, twisted, evergreen, and stout. Twigs are brown-gray with red-brown buds. Bark is orange-brown and scaly. Cones are about 2 inches long, gray-brown and armed. Virginia pine is found on a variety of sites in the eastern U.S. and as far south as northern Alabama and is shade intolerant. The wood is used for pulpwood, construction lumber, and fuel. This tree is planted in Christmas tree plantations and used for privacy screens.
