Needles are fascicled, in groups of two, 2-4 inches long, evergreen and flexible. Bark is orange-brown to orange-gray and scaly. Cones are approximately 3 inches long, serotinous, gray and armed with prickles. Sand pine is found on the sandy soils of the lower Coastal Plain and is intolerant of shade.  The wood is used for pulpwood and fuel.  Also planted in Christmas tree plantations.
