Leaves are simple, alternate, deciduous, obovate, densely pubescent on the underside, and with shallow bristle-less lobes. Twigs are gray-brown and scaly. Bark is light-gray, scaly, and furrowed. Acorn is up to 4 inches long with a fringed cap covering up to half of the nut and maturing in one season. Swamp white oak is found on moist to wet sites in the east and central U.S. as far south as Tennessee. The wood is used as white oak lumber.
