Leaves are simple, alternate, deciduous, up to 7 inches long,
elliptical, and with bristle-tipped teeth. Bark
is red-gray to black and ridged. Acorn cap has conspicuous long
scales that are "hair-like". Trees may fruit as early as 5 years under good conditions. Sawtooth
oak is a native of Asia and planted for wildlife food and as an ornamental.
