Leaves are shiny green, compound, alternate, and deciduous with 9-23 leaflets and green, wing-like leafy projections on the rachis. Twigs are red-brown with hair and conspicuous lenticels. Bark is warty and red-brown. Flowers are green-white. Fruit is a cluster of red-brown drupes. Winged sumac is a shrub to small tree forming thickets in open areas in the east and central U.S. The fruits are eaten by birds and are very tart in taste.
