BYLAWS

Auburn University Student Chapter

of the

Southeastern Section

of the

Society of American Foresters

June 1, 1970

I. Name. The name of the organization shall be the Auburn University Student Chapter of the Southeastern Section of the Society of American Foresters. The boundaries of the Chapter shall be the campus of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama.

II. Objectives. The objectives of this Chapter of the Society shall be to advance the science, technology, education, and practice of professional forestry in America, especially in the Southeastern region, to use the knowledge and skill of the profession to benefit society, and to maintain a closer fellowship among all students interested in forestry.

III-A. Membership: The membership of the Student Chapter will consist of regular members and affiliate members.

(a) Regular members will consist of (full time or part time) graduate or undergraduate students of the School of Forestry of Auburn University who have fulfilled the duties required for membership by Section III-B(a) of these By-Laws. These members are entitled to the privileges defined by Section III-B(a).

(b) Affiliate members will consist of any other (full-time or part-time) graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in any other school or college in Auburn University. These members are entitled to the privileges defined in Section III-B(b).

(c) "Membership in this organization is open to all interested and otherwise qualified students without regard to race, sex, ethnic group, or disability."

III-B. Duties and Privileges of Members:

(a) All regular members, as defined by Section III-A(a) of these By-Laws are required to pay a $15 annual fee to the Student Chapter. These members are entitled to participate in all Student Chapter activities, to vote on any business before the Chapter, and to hold any office of the Chapter. These members are not entitled to any of these privileges unless he or she has paid the annual dues.

(b) All affiliate members, as defined by Section III-A(b) of these By-Laws are entitled to participate in all Student Chapter activities and are allowed to attend and participate in Student Chapter meetings. These members are allowed to vote in matters concerning the Forestry Club but not in matters concerning the Student Chapter of SAF, as to be determined by the president at the time. These members will be required to pay the above mention $15 dollar annual membership dues.

IV-A. Officers. The officers of this Chapter shall be a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and such officers as may be found necessary, elected from the Regular Members. (These officers will comprise the Executive Committee, which is the governing body of the Student Chapter and handles its essential business between meetings of the Chapter, including an annual audit of the financial record).

IV-B. Term of Office. The officers of the Chapter shall be elected on the last meeting of Spring term by a majority vote of the Voting Members voting by secret ballot, to serve for one year following election. In the event that an office becomes vacant for any reason, a special election to fill such vacancy for the remainder of the regular term will be held within thirty days and the elected officer will assume his duties immediately.

IV-C. Duties.

(a) President: The Duties of the President will be to appoint and counsel needed standing and ad hoc committees, to preside at meetings, and to direct the activities of the Student Chapter.

(b) Vice-President: The duties of the Vice-President will be to assist the President in carrying out the duties of that office and to represent the President at all meetings, on all committees, and at all activities of the Student Chapter in the President's absence. The Vice-President will also perform other duties usually assigned to such an officer.

(c) Secretary: The duties of the Secretary will be to maintain records of meetings and activities and to report the activities of the chapter to the President upon request or at least once a year. The secretary will also maintain a current roll of the chapter membership, and perform other duties usually assigned to such an officer, including notifying members of future meetings.

(d) Treasurer: The duties of the Treasurer will be to keep record of all the Chapter's finances to include but not be limited to: the Chapter's checking account, the Chapter's Conclave Fund, and all revenues from fund raisers. The Treasurer will also report this information to the President upon request and perform other duties usually assigned to such an officer.

IV-D. Faculty Advisor. The Student Chapter will have a Faculty Advisor to be appointed by the Dean of the School of Forestry. The Faculty Advisor will provide assistance and guidance to the Chapter when necessary or requested.

FINANCES

V. Assessments. Membership dues for the Student Chapter will be $15 per year. Assessments may be implemented in order to carry out Chapter activities when voted for by a two-thirds majority of those voting at a regular announced meeting.

MEETINGS

VI. Meetings. Not less than one meeting per month shall be scheduled by the Executive Committee.

POWER OF PETITION

VII-A. Petition. A petition addressed to the President of the Student Chapter signed by at least 1/5 of the Voting Members will make a ballot of the voting membership mandatory, a majority of those voting being sufficient to arrive at a decision of any matter other than impeachment, assessment or amendment.

VII-B. Impeachment. A petition addressed to the President of the Student Chapter signed by at least 1/5 of the Voting Members will make a ballot of the voting membership mandatory, a 2/3 majority of those voting (with all members being notified of the petition at least one week in advance of casting ballots) being sufficient to remove an officer from office for inadequate performance of duty.

AMENDMENTS

VIII. Amendments. Amendments to these Bylaws may be made by a 2/3 majority of those Voting Members voting. Proposed amendments shall be admitted to all voting members at least two weeks in advance of the date set for counting the ballots. Amendments shall be effective immediately upon their approval unless otherwise provided in the amendment.

IX.   Amendment.  Any money made on firewood or any other money making ventures is club money.  No money other than money for supplies (gas, saw work, parts, etc.) shall be given back to students.  Receipts will be necessary for refunds.
